A regional airport in the UK has revealed that its services to Turkey were very popular with consumers last month.

Exeter International Airport revealed that it dealt with a record number of passengers in August 2008, as more than 114,000 people passed through its doors.

Jamie Christon, deputy managing director of the Devon-based hub, said the increase has been partly fuelled by the growing appeal of destinations such as Turkey.

He commented: "We are absolutely delighted with the airport's performance.

"There was a notable take-up for the flights to Turkey."

Mr Christon added that the economic slowdown in the UK does not seem to be stopping people in Devon from travelling abroad.

Meanwhile, low-cost airline easyJet has confirmed that it is to launch a new service between London Gatwick Airport and Istanbul.

Direct flights to the Turkish city will begin operating in December in time for the Christmas and new year holiday season.
