Turkey received visits from over 26 million holidaymakers in 2008, according to officials from the country's tourism organisation.
Ismet Yilmaz, a member of Turkey's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, told a meeting in the province of Bursa this week that the country's tourism industry experienced growth of 13% this year, hurriyet.com reports.
He said that, with income of $21 billion (£14.4 billion) from tourism, Turkey is now firmly established as one of the world's top ten nations in terms of visitor levels and tourist revenue.
"Turkey's tourism income is almost equal to the tourism income of the whole African continent," Mr Yilmaz stated.
"The Mediterranean province of Antalya welcomed its ninth million tourist last month."
Property investors looking for a potentially lucrative rental market are likely to be encouraged by Turkey's growing popularity with holidaymakers.
The country was recently identified as a "holiday hotspot" for 2009 by the Association of British Travel Agents.
