Property developers in Abu Dhabi may soon be required to meet new green standards when building new homes.

Abu Dhabi's Urban Planning Council (UPC) has confirmed that it wants to make development in the area more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Therefore, it has drawn up a series of regulations outlining certain requirements that new buildings will be expected to meet.

It is hoped that this will allow Abu Dhabi to become a model for other parts of the United Arab Emirates and lead the way in boosting the country's green credentials.

Falah Al Ahbabi, general manager of the UPC, commented: "We are fine-tuning the guidelines for new green buildings, ratings and communities to be enforced as law in January 2009."

Earlier this week, Shelter Offshore predicted that the region would soon become a hotspot of activity among overseas property buyers.

This was said to be because the takeover of Manchester City Football Club by an Abu Dhabi-based property firm has generated lots of media coverage on the emirate.
