Old Dubai Houses Survive The Onslaught Of Urbanisation
If you were to imagine Dubai houses, the picture you'd probably conjure up is a Dubai house in an ultra-modern skyscraper or avant-garde beach-front property. Unfortunately, traditional Dubai houses have been consigned to obscurity with rapid urbanisation. Now there is an urgent call to conserve these Dubai houses before they completely disappear. Reuters reports that Bastakiya is one such locality that is fighting for survival.
Propelled by an influx of petro-dollars and a vision to build a world-class business hub, Dubai drew people from all over the world. Traditional Dubai houses soon gave way mushrooming skyscrapers, state-of-the-art business centres and multi-lane roads - trappings of a mega-polis. Developers bought out quaint Dubai houses that were replaced by colossal construction projects. Today modern Dubai houses are lifestyle symbols. They are in such high demand that supply just cannot keep up. In such a scenario, conservationist fear that the few remnants of old Dubai will soon disappear.
Bastakiya was what used to be old Dubai's central township. Now it comprises only one percent of the city. Dubai houses there were made of coral, gypsum and palm fronds. The unique feature of these Dubai houses were wind towers on the roof that routed cool breeze into the house replacing warm air from within. Intricate wood and stone work on old Dubai houses denoted the family's wealth and stature. In 1990 the Government bought most of the Dubai houses in Bastakiya to protect them from developers. Many of these Dubai houses were converted into galleries, cafes and museums. Historians fear that not much is being done to maintain surviving old Dubai houses and structures. The annual budget for the architectural heritage department is approximately $5.45 million. Fortunately there now a big effort to enhance political will, augment this budget and step up efforts to protect these ancient Dubai houses. There also is a movement to give Old Dubai, which includes Bastakiya with its traditional Dubai houses, UNESCO world heritage site status.
