A British airport has revealed that the amount of people passing through its doors has gone up in the last year.

East Midlands Airport stated that during the year to May 2008, there was a 10.7% increase in air passenger numbers.

Indeed, May saw the transport hub deal with more than half a million passengers within a single month for the very first time.

This was partially due to the two bank holiday weekends, which saw many consumers fly out to places such as Palma, Alicante, Malaga and Faro.

Penny Coates, managing director of East Midlands Airport, said the increase in custom is a "remarkable" achievement in the current climate.

She commented: "It's evidence that passengers choosing to fly from East Midlands appreciate the convenience, comfort and ease that we offer to get their journey off to a great start."

According to the Association of British Travel Agents, the credit crunch is not putting people in the UK off booking a trip abroad.

The organisation believes the current strength of the euro against the pound is not significantly denting the appeal of eurozone countries.
