Airport sees record passenger numbers

An airport in the UK has revealed that a record number of passengers passed through its doors last month.

Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBIA) revealed that it handled approximately 345,000 passengers during August 2008.

This is 5% up on the amount recorded a year earlier and the highest figure ever recorded in a single month.

Much of this growth was found to be fuelled by demand for flights to traditional European hotspots, such as Malaga in Spain.

Commenting on this development, the airport's Tony Hallwood said: "[LBIA] continues to outperform the market and takes its lead from the strength of the Yorkshire economy."

He added that flights from the transport hub are in strong demand among both business and leisure travellers.

This comes after Birmingham International Airport said that it also dealt with its highest-ever number of passengers last month, overtaking the previous record set three years earlier.
