Leisure travellers in the UK are becoming increasingly willing to spend more on their holidays, it has been revealed.

According to TUI Travel, many British tourists are upgrading their holidays to more expensive alternatives.

This was said to be partly because people are feeling miserable as a result of the economic downturn in Britain.

Average selling prices were found to have gone up by 13 per cent in the last year, which TUI has said is not solely down to cost increases.

Peter Long, chief executive of the firm, commented: "It's a mixture, with customers trading up, which is a positive trend.

"We're seeing strong demand to medium-haul destinations."

Mr Long added that holidays are becoming increasingly important to consumers as fears about a recession at home are becoming very "depressing".

Therefore, many are choosing to escape domestic woes and "recharge their batteries" overseas.

According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO), consumers now believe a holiday overseas is a vital part of their lives.

The organisation said this is because people believe they are working harder for longer, hence the need for a proper break.
