Many British expatriates believe they are fitting into their new communities very well, according to a new study.

Research by NatWest found that people who have left the UK are managing to integrate themselves into their country of residence.

Britons were said to be adopting a different way of life in order to help them assimilate and becoming an "integral" part of the place in which they now live.

However, this does not mean that their sense of being British has diminished.

Dave Isley, head of NatWest International Personal Banking, commented: "British expats really are at home abroad.

"They still want to hold onto what makes them essentially British and certain characteristics that are deemed as being British."

He highlighted their sense of humour as one quality expats wish to retain, although he added that they are merging this with cultures and traditions of their new home.

This follows a separate poll by NatWest which revealed that 81% of British expatriates feel happier now that they live outside the UK.
