The number of people choosing to head abroad this bank holiday weekend is higher than it was a year ago, new estimates suggest.

According to the Association of British Travel Agents (Abta), about two million people from the UK are set to spend this weekend in places such as Spain, Turkey and Portugal.

Frances Tuke, spokesperson for the organisation, said this is about 20,000 more than the amount recorded during the 2007 August bank holiday.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she commented: "It is a record, which is amazing in terms of the current economic situation."

Ms Tuke added that this shows how holidays are now deemed to be a necessity by many British people.

As a result, they are one of the "last things" to be sacrificed during a difficult economic period.

This comes after TUI Travel stated it has seen no evidence that demand for trips abroad is slowing down.

Peter Long, chief executive of the organisation, said it demonstrates how customers place "enormous value" on their holidays.
