Paphos lies in south-west Cyprus, about 50 km or 30 miles west of Limassol, where the biggest port on the island is located. The city boasts the country's second-largest airport, Paphos International Airport and offers holidaymakers some of the nicest beaches and most spectacular scenery in Cyprus. Property for sale in Paphos comes in a wide range of style, size, age, and cost.
In Antiquity, two cities called Paphos existed: Old Paphos, which is the archaeological site of Kouklia today, and New Paphos, where modern Paphos is situated today. Blessed with a subtropical Mediterranean climate, Cyprus has hot, dry summers that seem to last forever, and mild winters that make it an all-year-round destination for sun-hungry tourists. It also boasts some of Europe's most magnificent medieval castles, churches and mosques, as well as monuments from Antiquity and remains from pre-historic times.
According to legend, Pygmalion made an ivory cult image of Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love and beauty, which she liked so much, she brought it to life as Galatea. That young lady gave Pygmalion a son, Paphos. Old Paphos was located on a hill, just a few miles from the sea and it had been inhabited since the Neolithic period. This is where the Aphrodite cult had its centre. No wonder then that Cyprus is a popular honeymoon and wedding destination with tourists today! And many of them fall in love with Cyprus, and want to enjoy many more holidays on the island. This is where according to Greek legend, Aphrodite rose from the sea. If it was good enough for a Greek goddess...why not buy a holiday home?
New Paphos was founded near the sea, some 12 km north of Old Paphos, and has a good natural harbour. It is believed to have been founded by Nicocles, the last king of Palaepaphos at the end of the 4th century BC. Paphos has its own archaeological park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its outstanding ancient Greek and Roman remains, which include four large, richly decorated Roman villas.
Medieval Paphos Castle overlooks the present-day, picturesque fishing harbour, and dates back to the times when Paphos was the administrative centre, not Nicosia or the port of Larnaca took over in maritime importance.
Today the city boasts around 33,000 permanent residents and is home to Coral Bay Resort, Latchi and Aphrodite Hills Resort. The main residential area is the Kato Paphos Resort development along the seafront, with views of the old port and castle. Here abound luxury hotels and nightlife amenities of the city. Anywhere within the resort districts will be more expensive, but property for sale in Paphos comes in all shapes and sizes. Around 290,000 euros will buy an older 4-bedrooms detached house in Argaka, while a modest investment of 105,000 euros can buy a small 2-bedroomed semi-detached town house in the Polis district. Luxury property for sale in Paphos includes 3-bedroom villas with swimming pool and small garden in the Peyia area of the city.
