Banking In Estonia

An understanding of banking facilities in Estonia will enable you to plan your property purchase to its best potential. Find out the essentials below.

Estonian banks use the latest technology in internet banking and almost all services are offered digitally. Even contracts can be digitally signed with an Estonian resident ID card and the use of a card reader. This technology is available largely because most of Estonian banks have been taken over by Swedish, Norwegian or Finnish banking institutions.

With the recent global tightening of credit, the banks in Estonia have, in turn, adapted stricter regulations and lending policies.

In principal, it is relatively easy to open an account at any of the Estonian commercial banks. Individual requirements might differ between the various banks, particularly for non-EU nationals. It is advisable to contact the bank of your choice prior to opening an account in order to get the correct information on their particular requirements.

Amongst the documents normally required to open an account are: proof of identity and in the case of a company, a copy of the business register entry card (B-card /Chamber of Commerce registration). For equal joint ownership of a company, all partners need to be present.

Estonian cash dispensing machines accept all major debit and credit cards for cash withdrawal. Most of the big stores accept major credit cards and an increasing number of accept foreign debit cards.

Banks in Estonia also offer the possibility to hold funds in different currencies in the same account.
