Lagos is a historic town in the Western Algarve that offers hikers and walkers a perfect blend of beach-life and opportunities to explore the Monchique Mountains, the stunning backdrop against which Lagos is set.
Lagos is located within an hour's drive via the A22 of Faro International Airport. The town boasts a lively historic centre with bars and nightclubs, restaurants and shops where it's easy to meet up with friends or make new ones. Lagos is also within a short drive of zoos and waterparks. Hire a kayak for a few hours and paddle along the stunning coastline, which is overlooked by soaring cliffs.
However, it's the Serra de Monchique that is the star as far as mountain bikers, trekkers and walkers are concerned. There are around 100 hiking trails in these mountains, which attract hikers for most of the year. Tailor-made hiking or trekking holidays offer tours that range from gentle strolls along donkey tracks that lead through almond or orange groves to far more serious, challenging treks that will take you into the highest peaks of the Serra de Monchique.
Biking tours, trekking and hiking tours can also potentially open up a business opportunity, if you're hoping to relocate and buy a property in Lagos. A modern resale apartment with three bedrooms, within a short walk of the marina and beach, starts at around 270,000 euros. However, in the historic centre of Lagos it's possible to find far cheaper properties. For around 100,000 euros it's possible to buy a one-bedroom apartment within a couple of minutes of the seafront that will serve as a first step on the Lagos property ladder.
